Comprehensive Neuropsychological Evaluations for Children, Adolescents, Adults
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. Who should receive an evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is warranted when an individual is not meeting his or her full potential. Specifically, if an individual is not meeting developmental milestones, is struggling academically and/or socially, presents with behavioral or emotional difficulties, or is having other issues that prevent them from performing at their fullest then a neuropsychological evaluation may be an appropriate first course of action. Additionally, a neuropsychological evaluation can be helpful in determining giftedness, in offering diagnoses, and in identifying one’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
Q. What is a neuropsychological evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is a process by which one’s full cognitive, academic and social/emotional functioning is comprehensively assessed. Beyond “IQ” testing (although included), language, emotional, and motor abilities among others are fully assessed. A neuropsychological evaluation can offer important insights into how an individual learns and functions. Most importantly, results inform individualized recommendations to help you or your child reach their fullest potential.
The evaluation process typically entails the following:
- A complete history of the individual being assessed; this is usually accomplished through interview (parent or adult).
- Typically two testing sessions are sufficient to complete the battery of tests compiled based on referral reasons or concerns.
Q. What happens after the evaluation?
Following testing, Dr. Barak carefully interprets and synthesizes testing results with interviews of parents, teachers, along with clinical and school observations. A neuropsychological report is then generated which offers accessible interpretation of results. Most importantly, individualized recommendations which inform interventions, supports, accommodations, and a learning plan are offered. For Dr. Barak this is the crux of the evaluation process.
